After being accused of paying its workers less than minimum wage, McDonald’s has issued a raise for its Chinese employees, who will receive 12 to 56 percent more than they currently earn.
The move came after Chinese government authorities accused the fast-food chain of paying its part-time workers as little as 4 yuan (52 cents) per hour, or 46 percent below minimum wage. (See: McDonald’s, Yum! Alleged To Break Chinese Wage Laws.)

McDonald’s denied the wage hike is related to the unfavorable media coverage. Susanna Li, a vice president who oversees McDonald’s human resources, told China Daily that under the new wage initiative, its workers in Beijing and Guangzhou will be paid 15% above the local minimum and its Shanghai staff will earn 12% more than the government requirement.
