July 24, 2007: Responsible Round-Up

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

While Beijing strives to appear to balance the economic and environmental needs of China, it’s business as usual for many officials working in the provinces.

China’s finance ministry will beef up its fiscal support for resource conservation in the second half of 2007, Finance Minister Jin Renqing said in a statement published on Tuesday.

The Chinese Government’s proposed financing of the Barclays Bank takeover of ABN-Amro has dismayed the ethical investment sector, due to China’s abysmal human rights record.

ENVIRONMENT

From a public relations standpoint, it didn’t look good. In the space of less than a month, China had quashed two potentially embarrassing environmental reports that would have said what most people already know: This is a country facing a costly and increasingly deadly environmental crisis.

As the global temperature warms, how to deal with climate change has become a hot topic among the international community. As such, it is important to recognize both the potential and the challenge that China faces in reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

A FIERCE battle is being waged between leading Chinese government bodies about the introduction of a “green GDP”.
